The team led by Masayoshi Takeuchi (MIKAN) and Rie Nakada (HandiHouse project) is working toward Tokyo Biennale 2020/2021 to present a variety of ways of living for the coming age under the theme, “creating future lifestyles through tiny houses.” Starting small, they will present tiny houses as a means to obtain the “desired lifestyles” of an increasingly diverse range of individuals with a view to solving various social issues and realize a sustainable society.

For the Biennale pre-event in 2019 and 2020, TINY HOUSES were placed in Minami Ikebukuro Park where a “TINY HOUSE Exhibition” was held. The exhibition featured an array of designs and functions.

Masayoshi Takeuchi + Rie Nakada

Masayoshi Takeuchi (Architect): Born 1962 in Kanagawa Prefecture. Takeuchi codirects architect unit, MIKAN. He also serves as professor at Tohoku University of Art and Design, and as chief executive officer of ENERGY MACHIZUKURI-SHA INC. He has written “Can you passive-house it?” (X-Knowledge) and “Genpatsu to kenchikuka” (translation: “Nuclear Power Plants and Architects”) (Gakugei Shuppan-Sha). Works of architecture include Yamagata Eco-House, House-M, EXPO 2005 TOYOTA GROUP PAVILION, Inahigashi Elementary School, social welfare corporation KOBAISO, OGAL CENTER, and Ogal Kindergarten.

Nakada Rie (Architect): After working for a planning office, Nakada founded her own office called “Nakata Architects”. Taking on the motto, “from vision to actualization”, she organized the group “HandiHouse project”, which completes “by hand” the entire building process from design to construction. In order to create a handmade wedding venue by the ocean she built “SeasideLiving” in 2013, and continues to operate the space every summer. Nakada got the prize of the 2018 Tokyo Society of Architects & Building Engineers　“Future Architect ” award.
