BBancho・Kojimachi

Since the early Edo Period, there were a lot of residences for Daimyo and Hatamoto (samurais in direct service of the Tokugawa shogunate), surrounded by merchant houses in Bancho・Kojimachi area. After Meiji Restoration, numbers of writers or intellectuals set their home in this area. We can still encounter the traces of these nostalgic periods in the buildings.
As there are also many embassies, churches, or missionary schools around, giving a rich cosmopolitan culture in the area.
