Masamichi Toyama serves as a representative of Smiles Co., Ltd., a company that develops all types of business projects, including Soup Stock Tokyo. He is also a contemporary art collector, with a belief that art and business have a constant relationship with each other that can never be cut. Since 2014, Smiles has participated in Ichihara Art Mix, Echigo Tsumari Art Triennale, and Setouchi Triennale. Smiles has received positive attention for the edible artwork created in collaboration with Denso, as well as “Lemon Hotel”, a work that allows visitors to stay overnight. As a social experiment, in 2018 Toyama collaborated with the creative agency PARTY to found “The Chain Museum” and build the platform “ArtSticker” through which people can support artists. For the Tokyo Biennale, Toyama himself has been asked to join as an artist. He will present an artwork that actualizes the essential relationship between society, art, and the individual.

For Tokyo Biennale, Masamichi Toyama will be commissioned as an artist to create an artwork in the observation floor of the San-ai Dream Center in Ginza 4-chome, which will be reborn as an art gallery in June 2021. Based on the theme of “time,” his project will take the form of an installation and AR work  that incorporates the Wako Clock Tower and surrounding landscape.
