The area around Kanda Station has a lot of new buildings dotted with traditional Edo-style townhouses, shops with copperplate and mortar-painted signboards. Akihabara, the world-famous electronics district, and Ochanomizu, musical instrument, sporting goods, and student district, have completely different atmosphere, although they are all near each other. Yushima and Ueno are always crowded, because of their busy shopping area in front of the station, Ueno Park, Shinobazu Pond, and their many cultural facilities such as museums and art galleries. Kuramae, a little further east, is a traditional wholesale district, but in last few years, it has become more popular for the young, with shops and cafés renovated from old buildings.
